“Mitt Romney, when his back is to the wall, does what he has to do,” said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster who isn’t aligned with any presidential candidate. “That has quieted the chatter about another candidate for at least a week. It could be over a week from today, but it’s not over yet.”
